Anesthesia for total hip arthroplasty
نویسنده
چکیده
Recent advances in anesthetic care for patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty are summarized. Epidural and spinal anesthesia are associated with reduced perioperative blood loss and lower deep vein thrombosis rates. A new technique of inducing hypotension with epidural anesthesia is described. This technique is associated with low rates of deep vein thrombosis, blood transfusions, and enhanced cement-bone interface. Pulmonary fat-marrow embol i can now be assessed with echocardiography and changes in pulmonary artery pressure. Management strategies are also addressed and new techniques of postoperat ive pain control are discussed. In the past few years, the mortality rate following total hip arthroplasty has fal len to 0.1% at The Hospital For Special Surgery in New York City using hypotensive epidural anesthesia, ppropriate perioperat ive hemodynamic monitor ing, and rat ional postoperat ive pain control .

Effects of regional versus general anesthesia on outcomes after total hip arthroplasty: a retrospective propensity-matched cohort study.
BACKGROUND Many orthopaedic surgical procedures can be performed with either regional or general anesthesia. We hypothesized that total hip arthroplasty with regional anesthesia is associated with less postoperative morbidity and mortality than total hip arthroplasty with general anesthesia. METHODS This retrospective propensity-matched cohort study utilizing the American College of Surgeons ...
متن کاملIn-Hospital Outcomes after Hemiarthroplasty versus Total Hip Arthroplasty for Isolated Femoral Neck Fractures
Background: Previous studies suggest total hip arthroplasty may have some benefits compared to hemi-arthroplasty for displaced intracapsular femoral neck fractures in patients more than 60 years of age. The primary research question of our study was whether in-hospital adverse events, post-operative length of stay (LOS) and mortality in patients 60 year of age or older differed between tot...

Introduction: Optimum component positioning and orientation is required to optimize the functional result during total hip arthroplasty for dysplastic hips. Patients and methods: Sixty-two patients (66 hips) including 33 males and 29 females underwent total hip arthroplasty using modular stem prosthesis at an average age of 40.6 years (range 17 to 49 years). Nineteen hips were clas...
متن کاملRisk Factors for Postoperative Urinary Retention in Men Undergoing Total Hip Arthroplasty.
Postoperative urinary retention is a common complication after major orthopedic procedures of the lower limb. In total hip arthroplasty and total knee arthroplasty, the incidence ranges from 7% to 84%. In this study, the incidence and risk factors for postoperative urinary retention were described in a cohort of 376 men undergoing total hip arthroplasty. Postoperative urinary retention was defi...
